Northfield takes a beating as storms roll through town

August 25th, 2006

Thunder and lightning ripped through the Midwest Wednesday night and Thursday morning, leaving significant damage to many areas, including Northfield.  In the line of thunderstorms affecting Northfield, hail was dropped as large as softballs, and 11 police squad cars were smashed from hail damaged, forcing officers to to borrow vehicles from the sheriff’s office.  What Northfield saw, was pretty much only the least of it.

A half dozen tornadoes tore through central South Dakota, leaving farm homes destroyed and power lines damaged.

In Kasota, Minnesota, one man lost his life as a tornado ripped through his home.  In Wisconsin, lightning apparently killed a dozen cows and struck one women as she came out of a supermarket.

While the storms are over for now, we can probably expect to see more rain, and if not rain, we can look forward to hot and muggy temperatures reaching the low 90s.
