The Northfield Village gets second burial ground ownership

September 27th, 2006

That’s right, just two years after taking over ownership and management of another cemetary, the Northbrook Village Board has another maintenance project underway, and is now the proud owners of the Northfield Union Cemetery.  This cemetary dates all the way back to 1845, and much of our resident’s families are buried here.   On September 1, 2006, the village took over the cemetery, nearly 2.2-acres of it, on the south side of Dundee Road just west of Anthony Trail.  For the past 131 years, the cemetery has been abandoned from the independent church which founded it, and since then, volunteers have been taking care of the maintenance.  It is not decided yet whether the board will sell any more plots or redevelop unused land for other purposes, but either way, any move will help generate money for the village.  The cemetery came loaded with a $74,000 bank account which can last for up to 10 years.
