West Nile awareness helped tremendously

October 26th, 2006

With all of the warnings and tips to prevention this summer, the West Nile virus was reduced this year according to Illinois health officials.  Cooler late-summer temperatures and increased awareness were both factors.   205 people in Illinois this year were diagnosed, nine died.  Last year, 252 cases were reported and there were 12 deaths.  Mosquito season is effectively over with the first frost, so no more need to worry right now.  Officials are expecting to see a handful of cases over the course of the next month.  All in all, it was a successful year in the fight against West Nile, even though just two short months ago, it was not looking so good.
